Mastering Electricty With Confidence

Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Upgrading

Your electrical panel is an important part of your home's electrical system. When it starts malfunctioning, it will give off clear signals that something is not right.

You need to be aware of the signs that your electrical panel needs replacement or an upgrade. Take a look at the most obvious signs that you need to call an electrician to get the job done.

Dimming or Flickering Lights

Dimming and flickering lights are common in household electrical systems. It may happen because a bulb needs tightening or there is loose wiring in an electrical socket. These problems can easily be rectified.

However, things become problematic when the dimming or flickering only happens when you turn on high-energy appliances such as your washing machine or dryer. This is a clear indication that your electrical panel is being overloaded. Call an electrician to take a look at it as soon as you can.

Tripping Breakers

It is also normal for your breaker to trip occasionally to prevent your electrical system from being overloaded. However, if you notice that your breaker trips continuously when you plug in appliances that use a lot of energy, it's time to call an electrician for an inspection.

In some cases, you may even hear a sound coming from the breaker panel as it trips. The bottom line is that when your panel cannot handle the electrical flow, it will trip frequently. This is a clear sign that it's time for an upgrade.

Burning Smells

Burning smells coming from your breaker box is not a good sign. You may also see sparks coming from the electrical panel as well.

This is indicative of problems with the circuits and wiring. Sparks and burning smells coming from your breaker panel present a fire hazard that needs to be addressed by an electrician as quickly as possible.

It's Aging

Sometimes breaker panels need to be changed because they are too old. If you notice any of the three signs discussed earlier and your breaker panel is decades old, it likely needs an upgrade.

An electrician can take a look at the panel for you and determine the best type of electrical panel for replacement.

If you are experiencing problems with your electrical panel, you must take action to get it resolved as quickly as possible.
